Warner Home Video's Halloween offering this year is a mismatched but enthusiastically received quartet of movies released as Karloff & Lugosi Horror Classics. The title's a bit misleading: the two films highlighting Lugosi are chiefly comedies and he's on the sidelines in both, though each is worthwhile. Of the two Karloff vehicles, one is a terrific little film heretofore not widely available while the other features one of the beloved actor's few bad - really bad - performances, though both Karloff and '50s sci-fi fans understandably have been anxious to get their hot little hands on this one for years. The films are The Walking Dead (1936), You'll Find Out (1940), Zombies on Broadway (1945), and Frankenstein 1970 (1958).
The presentations look just fine and, better still, The Walking Dead and Frankenstein 1970 feature outstanding audio commentaries which are enormously fun and crammed with information. These days this reviewer rarely sticks through such things all the way through but I didn't want these to end.
